AdventHealth Medical Group Urology at Denver Offers a Variety of Bladder Control Treatment Solutions

Bladder control issues are common – in fact, overactive bladder (OAB) affects more than 43 million Americans. If you have an overactive bladder, you may experience:

  • Sudden urge to urinate that's hard to control.
  • Unintentional urine loss following an urgent need to urinate, known as urgency incontinence.
  • Urinate often, typically ten or more times in a 24-hour period.
  • Wake up more than twice during the night to urinate.

Even if you can get to the toilet in time when you feel an urge to urinate, having to urinate often during day and night can disrupt your life and feel socially isolating.

The providers at AdventHealth Medical Group Urology in Denver and Lone Tree are dedicated to offering exceptional, personalized care. Our experienced urologists and urology surgeons stay at the forefront of the latest advancements in urological care, including minimally invasive procedures. We are committed to creating treatment plans tailored to each patient's unique needs.

One of the treatments our practice offers is the Medtronic NURO system, which works by using gentle nerve stimulation, targeting the brain-bladder communication pathway. Miscommunication between the bladder and the brain is a common reason people face bladder control issues. Those affected are unable to tell when their bladder is full until it’s too late. Treatment is delivered through 30-minute in-office sessions, once a week for 12 weeks. The NURO system stimulates the tibial nerve through an acupuncture-like needle which is placed near the ankle.

The treatment feels like a slight tingle but is not painful or uncomfortable. Unlike oral or injectable medications, NURO does not have unpleasant or lingering side effects. Four out of five patients saw their OAB episodes reduce by at least half and 40% were completely content by the end of their treatment.

Another treatment option the team offers is the Medtronic InterStim system, which targets the cause of symptoms directly and allows patients to try the therapy for a short time before making any lasting decisions. The InterStim system is a small device that is placed entirely beneath the skin and is powered by a small neurostimulator that sits in the upper buttock. It uses gentle stimulation to help restore bladder-brain communication. The therapy is called sacral neuromodulation because it works on the sacral nerves.

Eighty-two percent of therapy users experienced 50% or greater symptom improvement. The InterStim system is also proven to treat bowel control issues as well. Patients are able to test out the device for 3-14 days before deciding if they want to have the long-term device implanted.

Other treatments that are offered to help with bladder control issues include Botox and bladder slings.
