John Kupferschmid, MD, is a board-certified thoracic and cardiac surgeon with over 30 years of experience. He specializes in adult congenital heart disease and pediatric cardiac surgery.
Dr. Kupferschmid earned a medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, IN, and holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Texas at San Antonio in San Antonio, TX. His surgical internship and residencies took place at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA, where he also served as a research fellow and chief resident. He was the cardiothoracic surgery chief resident at Boston University Medical Center and a research fellow in pediatric cardiac surgery at Boston Children’s Hospital in Boston, MA. He spent most of his career at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in San Antonio, TX, where he was the chief of congenital heart surgery. He held the same position at Penn State University Medical Center and, since 2023, has been a consultant cardiac surgeon at El Paso Children’s Hospital in El Paso, TX. Dr. Kupferschmid is the author of numerous book chapters, articles in professional journals, and presentations nationally and internationally.
