The front lawn of Winter Park City Hall was painted pink when the community gathered to hear the record-breaking numbers from Pink Out Winter Park 2012. The breast cancer awareness campaign raised record funds totaling more than $25,000 and counting, which equals 167 free mammograms. The money will be donated to the Winter Park Memorial Hospital Mammography Scholarship Fund, to provide free diagnostic services to women who cannot afford their yearly recommended mammogram screenings.
We are so proud of the way the community came together this year for breast cancer awareness, said Ken Bradley, mayor of the City of Winter Park. Pink Out Winter Park not only raised enough money to help 167 women get free screening mammograms, but we also broke a world record.
Pink Out also officially announced that the Guinness World Record for the most number of people standing on one leg ”like a flamingo” was officially broken at the September 9, 2012, kick-off event, with 1,774 people. The previous record had been set in March 2012 in Denmark, with 1,103 people. However, the City of Winter Park was not the only community standing on one leg for breast cancer awareness this year. In a weird twist of fate, Pink Out's world record was later broken on October 18, 2012, in London, with a group of people taking a stand for breast cancer.
We may have only held the world record for five weeks, but we still broke a world record and raised a lot of awareness for breast cancer, Amanda Maggard, assistant administrator of Winter Park Memorial Hospital, said. One in eight women is likely to develop breast cancer, but the earlier the cancer is detected, the better the chances of recovery. That is why it is so important to remind women of the importance of yearly screening mammograms and help those in our community who do not have the resources to get one.
All along Park Avenue and Hannibal Square, participating local retailers and food and service vendors sold various pink products, and a portion of their proceeds were also donated to the Mammography Scholarship Fund. The Pink Out flamingos also flocked to iconic locations and homes around Winter Park. In total, 5,000 pink flamingos were placed around the city. Pink Out Winter Park will return next year, but to donate to the Winter Park Memorial Hospital Mammography Scholarship Fund at any time, call Call407-303-5207.
