June 8 is recognized as World Brain Tumor Day which holds a special significance for one of our team members. After visiting AdventHealth Shawnee Mission’s emergency room in March of 2022 with what she described as "the worst headache of her life", Lindsey Thompson was diagnosed with an 8cm malignant brain tumor. Since then, the mom of four has undergone multiple surgeries, radiation treatments and chemo. Lindsey knew something was off with her health for years, but it wasn’t until she came to AdventHealth that she felt listened to, cared for and treated as a whole person. She credits AdventHealth with not only saving her life, but with helping her feel seen and validated following years of symptoms that she now knows were caused by her cancer. Her cancer is now considered stable, and doctors say that she is doing remarkably well considering the size of the tumor.

Lindsey was so moved by the quality of care she received that when she found herself in search of a new job a few months later, she couldn’t think of anywhere she would rather work than AdventHealth. Lindsey is now a team member with AdventHealth Medical Group Primary Care at Shawnee Mission, checking in patients who are arriving for appointments. She loves being able to connect with patients on their own health journeys and has encountered many times where her own story has helped patients navigating a new diagnosis. Lindsey is a calm, smiling presence who brightens the days of every patient and team member who interacts with her.
