ORLANDO, Fla., October 23, 2013- Garry Welsh is going the distance for Lung Cancer Awareness Month by Tri-ing For A Cure. The 49-year-old businessman is leaving the boardroom behind to compete in his first Ironman triathlon in Arizona on November 17. He is dedicating this 140.6-mile triathlon in honor of his wife's courageous battle with lung cancer. He has also set a goal to raise $60,000 for cancer research at Florida Hospital.
Welsh, a father of 4, and grandfather to 5, has served as a level executive for a number of major companies. His passion is helping businesses and individuals improve their performance. This time however, he has turned the spotlight on himself as he seeks to stretch his mind, body and spirit to a new level. The pursuit of his Ironman bucket list goal, began in April 2012 when he entered a short distance triathlon in Florida with no previous training! This experience triggered his desire to step up, and he immediately began to focus on training for the Ironman. Two weeks later, Welsh received news that would turn his world upside down: his wife was diagnosed with lung cancer.
Welsh's wife and true Ironman inspiration, Christine, is a life-long non-smoker whose lung cancer diagnosis took them both by complete surprise. Christine underwent surgery where a large portion of her right lung was removed. She was determined to bounce back better than ever and even completed her first half marathon within 4 months of her operation. Welsh's main focus was supporting Christine's recovery, but he found time to squeeze in his own training when he could. Welsh witnessed his wife's courageous battle and her victories; now he is ready to take on a big challenge of his own in her honor.
It's going to be me on me out there for 140.6 miles! As I countdown those miles during the race, it would be great to know I've reached my goal of raising at least $60,000 for lung cancer research. I'll also be immensely grateful to see Christine's smiling face as I cross that finish line, said Garry Welsh.
