AdventHealth Celebrates Successful Smoking Cessation Class: Empowering the Community to Breathe Easier

MANCHESTER, Ky., AdventHealth Manchester is proud to announce the successful completion of its first Freedom from Smoking cessation program of 2025, a significant step in its ongoing commitment to improving the health and well-being of the community. This program, offered in partnership with Volunteers of America Mid-States, was hosted by Valerie Newman, RN, and Jamie Feltner, RN, at AdventHealth Manchester, who brought their expertise and compassionate care to guide participants on their journey to a smoke-free life.

The Freedom from Smoking cessation program is a vital part of AdventHealth Manchester's broader efforts to address the alarming rates of tobacco usage and lung cancer in Clay County. Lung cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in the region, and initiatives like this are crucial in combating this public health issue.

Participants in the program received comprehensive support, including educational resources on the dangers of tobacco use, strategies for quitting, and ongoing encouragement from healthcare professionals. The program's positive impact is already being felt, as attendees expressed their gratitude for the tools and support provided to help them make lasting changes.

Danny McCracken, a participant in the Freedom from Smoking cessation program at the VOA Recovery Community Center, shared his experience: “I went to the smoking cessation classes at the VOA Recovery Community Center because I’m a smoker and have been a long time. I’m open to new opportunities on how to better my life and to stop smoking is definitely on my list. Valerie from AdventHealth was super-supportive and a sweet person. I was impressed by the free quit smoking supplies and Valerie got pizza for us too. It was a great series of classes, and I’d recommend this program to everyone who has a desire to stop smoking. I haven’t stopped smoking yet, but I have cut my habit by half. Thank you!”

AdventHealth Manchester's dedication to tackling tobacco usage is not only about reducing cancer rates but also about fostering a healthier, more vibrant community. By empowering individuals to quit smoking, the hospital is helping to create a ripple effect of wellness that extends beyond the participants themselves.
