Experts in Endoscopic Diagnosis and Treatment
When doctors need to see inside the body to get a better look at a condition without using surgery, they use endoscopy. The word comes from the Greek words that mean to look inside. Several gastroenterologists at the AdventHealth Digestive Institute have training in advanced endoscopy. Besides providing a better look, endoscopy can be used to collect cell samples for biopsy and even to treat some conditions. AdventHealth Digestive Institute surgeons are among the few in the region who use endoscopy approaches for minimally invasive, scarless surgery.
What Is Endoscopy?
Endoscopy involves using an endoscope: a thin, flexible tube with a light and camera on the end. An endoscope displays pictures on a color monitor of the area being examined. To make an endoscopic procedure more comfortable, a patient is often lightly sedated or given general anesthesia. Because endoscopy for digestive conditions uses one of the body’s natural openings, no surgical incisions are involved.
Types of Endoscopic Procedures
Depending on the part of the digestive system affected, one of several types of endoscopic procedures might be done. An upper endoscopy looks at the esophagus (food tube), stomach and first part of the small intestine. A colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy (lower endoscopy) looks at the colon (large intestine). Capsule endoscopy and deep enteroscopy look at the small intestine. There are even ways to use endoscopy to view the gallbladder and pancreas.
At the Digestive Health Institute, endoscopy is provided by our gastroenterologists and surgeons. The doctor performing your endoscopy will depend on your condition and what type of endoscopy you need.
Preparing for an Endoscopy
How to prepare for endoscopy and the small potential for risks involved are based on the specific endoscopic procedure and the portion of the body involved. The DHI medical team will work closely with you so that you fully understand your endoscopic procedure. We want you to be comfortable with and well prepared for your procedure that it is safe and effective.
