What to Expect When you Visit the Emergency Department

Arrival

When you arrive in the Emergency Department, you will be assessed by a nurse to determine the severity of your illness or injury. Patients are seen according to the seriousness of their medical problem. Critically ill and injured patients are always seen first. Generally, all other patients are seen in the order in which they arrived.

Registration

At registration you will be asked information about yourself, your family, your doctor, employment and insurance. This is necessary to make a record of your visit. You will be asked to sign a consent form for your care. The consent of a parent or legal guardian is required for children under age 18.

While you Wait

Illness and injury are treated based on the severity of need. If your condition is not severe or life-threatening, you may wait several hours in the waiting room while those more critically injured are treated. If your condition should change while in the waiting room, please notify the nurse. Please inform us if you are in pain. Please do not eat or drink anything while you wait, as this may interfere with your treatment.

Consultations and Tests

After you are taken to a treatment room, you will be examined by a physician. They may need to order tests or consult with specialists. This may take two to four hours. Your patience and cooperation are greatly appreciated.

Admission to the Hospital

If you require admission to the hospital, you may have to wait while arrangements are made to have a bed ready. Because it is an unscheduled admission, it may take time to make space available or to arrange for the necessary staff. The ED staff will care for you until you are transferred to a room within the hospital.

Discharge

When you are discharged, you will be given detailed instructions on caring for your illness or injury at home. These instructions will also include the name of the physician or clinic where you have been referred for follow-up care.

Recommendation Have a Primary Care Physician

AdventHealth Ottawa recommends that everyone have a Primary Care Physician for all your on-going healthcare needs. Many illnesses and injuries may cause you to seek immediate help, however, not every case is serious enough for a visit to the ER. That's why we offer same day appointments! In most cases, depending on the level of care you need and the time of day when you call, you’ll receive care that day.

We are not accepting walk-ins at this time. Call Call785-229-8888 to schedule an appointment. We’re open Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4:30 pm.
