WEST VOLUSIA, Fla., January 8, 2018 Florida Hospital DeLand and Florida Hospital Fish Memorial have selected Anna Shields to serve as an antimicrobial stewardship and infectious disease pharmacist.
In this role, Shields is responsible for coordinating a multidisciplinary program for both Florida Hospital facilities to promote the appropriate use of antimicrobial agents, as well as assisting in the optimal selection of antibiotic drug regimen, dose, duration of therapy, and route of administration. Antimicrobial stewardship improves patient outcomes, reduces microbial resistance to antibiotics, and decreases the spread of infections caused by multidrug-resistant organisms.
In addition to her passion for the field of infectious disease, Shields other major professional interests include diabetes and glycemic management, as well as oncology.
A DeLand resident, Shields received her doctorate in pharmaceutical sciences, graduating summa cum laude from the University of Florida. In addition, she completed a Post-Graduate Year 1 (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency program at Florida Hospital Altamonte.
