About Our Program
Welcome to AdventHealth for Children’s PGY-2 Pediatric Pharmacy Specialty Residency Program! Our residency program offers two full-time, 12-month positions with an intensive curriculum accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). The purpose of our residency program is to provide residents with a learning environment that will enhance critical thinking skills, facilitate independent practice, and foster leadership skills necessary to provide specialized, patient-focused care for pediatric patients. It is our goal to help residents optimize drug therapy to improve patient outcomes and ultimately become confident Pediatric Clinical Specialists on a multidisciplinary health care team.
AdventHealth for Children is a 247-bed acute care teaching hospital, including a 102-bed Level IV NICU, 22-bed Level I PICU, 12-bed Hematology/Oncology Unit, 6-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, 8-bed Cellular Therapy Unit, 50-bed General Medical/Surgical Unit, 16-bed Procedural Sedation Unit, 15-bed CVICU, 16-bed ED and Central Florida’s only Pediatric Renal Transplant and Liver Transplant programs.
AdventHealth for Children received a $10 million contribution in 2007 from Walt Disney World towards an expansion project which was completed in early 2011. AdventHealth for Children is also a recipient of Disney’s Team of Heroes philanthropic outreach program which delivers comfort and inspiration to families with children facing serious illness by reimagining the patient and family experience in children’s hospitals.
AdventHealth for Children serves as a major tertiary facility in Orlando, Florida, and is affiliated with seven AdventHealth campuses for adult patients in Central Florida, including Level II NICUs and Pediatric EDs. AdventHealth’s mission is to “Extend the healing ministry of Christ” and we have a long-standing history of excellence in patient care. AdventHealth for Children is recognized by U.S. News & World Report as the best children’s hospital for newborn care in Florida. Our Mission
At AdventHealth for Children, the primary mission of the Department of Pharmacy is to provide quality pharmaceutical care to improve the patient's quality of life while providing support for caregivers. As part of multidisciplinary teams, we share the responsibility of monitoring responses to drug therapy and optimizing patient care to improve patient therapeutic outcomes in the pediatric patient population.
Pharmacy Services
- Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) review
- Patient medication profile review
- Sterile IV preparation in a USP 797 compliant facility
- Pharmacists/technicians led Pharmacy Practice Council
- Patient care rounds on a variety of multidisciplinary teams
- Therapeutic drug monitoring (automatic consults for management of pediatric aminoglycoside and vancomycin therapies)
- Parenteral nutrition
- Provide discharge counseling utilizing MedAction Plans
- Pharmaceutical care (i.e., medication adjustments for renal and hepatic dysfunction, IV to PO conversions, iatrogenic withdrawal management)
- Provide drug information and education to physicians, nurses, patients, and other ancillary staff
- Warfarin and asthma education and patient counseling
- Team members on core patient care committees for the development of evidence-based guidelines
- Formulary management activities
- Precept pharmacy students and residents
- Participate in IRB-approved research projects

The PGY-2 Pediatric Pharmacy Residents at AdventHealth for Children are provided with opportunities to function independently as practitioners in a variety of pediatric patient care settings. Through integration of accumulated experiences and knowledge, residents will focus on the provision of patient care that improves medication therapy. Residents who successfully complete our residency program will attain the skills and competencies that qualify them for a clinical pharmacist position and will be eligible to sit for pediatric board certification.
PGY-2 Program Purpose
PGY-2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY-1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY-2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY-2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.
Overview- Positions available: Two full-time, 12-month commitment
- Estimated Annual Stipend: $56,800/year
- Travel Support: 1 Professional Pharmacy Meeting

Required Rotations (duration: 5 weeks, except December & February Rotations (6 weeks))
- Distribution and Clinical Orientation
- General Pediatrics
- Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
- Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
- Pediatric Hematology/Oncology
- Pediatric Pharmacy Leadership and Research
Elective Rotations (duration: 5 weeks, except February rotation (6 weeks))
Residents may select 4 elective rotations of their choice. *Note: Any required clinical learning experience may be repeated as an elective. Additional elective learning experiences may be developed based on resident interest and preceptor availability. Options for elective rotations include the following:
- Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit
- Pediatric Cellular Therapy
- Pediatric Gastroenterology
- Pediatric Pharmacy Administration
- Pediatric Emergency Medicine
- Pediatric Infectious Diseases
- Precepting, Ad Hoc (evaluation for layered learning opportunities)
Longitudinal Experiences
- Coordinated Care for Kids Clinic (CCK), 10 months (4 hours schedule every other week)
- Drug Distribution and Operations, 12 months (8 hour shifts every 3rd weekend)
- Pediatric Research Project, 12 months*
- Pediatric Medication Use Evaluation, 9 months*
- Pediatric Continuing Education, 6 months*
*Residents will have the opportunity to take at least one dedicated project day per rotation to focus on longitudinal experiences such as Pediatric Research Project, Pediatric Continuing Education and Pediatric Medication Use Evaluation.

- Applicant(s) should be graduates of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) degree program (or in the process of pursuing accreditation)
- Applicant(s) should be participating in or have completed an ASHP-accredited PGY1 pharmacy residency (or program in candidate or pre-candidate status), or received ASHP PGY1 exemption
- State of Florida Pharmacy License (or eligible for Florida Pharmacy License)
- Participant in the ASHP National Matching Program
- Participant in PhORCAS
Materials Required for Application
- All application materials must be submitted using the ASHP Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS)
- Curriculum vitae (CV)
- Letter of Intent (discuss your motivation and desire to pursue a pediatric specialty and your professional goals you would like to accomplish in the next 2-5 years)
- 3 letters of recommendation (utilizing the PhORCAS template): 1 letter must be from your PGY1 Residency Program Director, 1 letter must be from a Clinical preceptor
- Transcripts from all Colleges of Pharmacy attended
- All application materials must be submitted via PhORCAS by January 3rd
